Tinea Pedis, or what is more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a fairly common problem. It may not be one of the more severe issues, but from a dermatological standpoint, it can be incredibly bothersome. Oftentimes you’ll have itching in your feet, maybe redness or scaling, and sometimes even blistering between your toes. This problem can be very persistent and annoying as your feet may itch, burn, and be very uncomfortable.

How do you get tinea pedis?

Tinea pedis is caused by fungus. There are various specimens of species of fungus that can affect your skin. Fungus grows and evolves in dark, wet, and warm areas, which makes the foot a prime area for this to occur. You can try to not wear shoes as much, or possibly use an antiperspirant on your feet to reduce the chances of fungus. There is also some belief that tinea pedis may be caused by genetics. In other words, some people are just more prone to it, and their immune systems don’t combat it as easily.

Another problem that can ensue if you have fungal tinea pedis is onychomycosis, which is fungus of the toenails. This can also be incredibly frustrating and a bit more difficult to treat. At Anderson Podiatry Center we often recommend laser treatment, which is a very successful treatment plan for those that have tinea pedis spreading to their toenails.

Treatments

If you’re finding yourself suffering from tinea pedis, it’s important to try and keep your feet dry. There are many over the counter antiperspirants that can be used, as well as Lotrimin, which is a cream used to treat a variety of fungal skin infections. You may also consider spraying your shoes with antifungal spray after each use.

However, it is important to have this properly diagnosed because your at-home treatments may not work if you don’t know exactly what you’re treating. Sometimes, with severe cases, oral medication is recommended. Oral medications can be taken and are very successful in eliminating this problem.
