The idea of stem cells and regenerative medicine is not new. This concept has existed in the scientific community for more than 100 years. Research in this area started in the 1980’s and 90’s, but more recently, it is being done at a much more rapid pace to advance these concepts.
We all have likely considered that as we age, our bodies will begin to degenerate. By using regenerative medicine, we now have the potential to actually reverse this process, turning the clock back. Regenerative cells can literally stimulate your body at the cellular level, giving it the power to regenerate those damaged joints and tissues.
How Does Treatment Work?
Regenerative treatments are administered as a simple, in-office injection. When treatment is performed, stem cells, proteins and growth factors are injected into the affected area. There is very little down time required and patients are soon able to return to regular activities. You should feel maximum results 9 to 12 weeks after the injection, and at this time, you may increase your activity level to match your comfort. For some patients, the maximum benefit of the regenerative process may continue for up to 6 months or a year.
What Products Do We Use?
We use three types of regenerative medicine products, and these are regulated by the FDA to ensure safety. The companies that provide these have extensive experience in this field and are among the leaders in regenerative medicine.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
These are stem cells that are derived from the patient. We draw the patients’ blood, process it, and these platelets (which are rich in growth factors) are then injected into the affected area to repair the joint or tissues. Taking the patient’s blood, processing it, and administering the injection, all takes place during one office visit.
This is a MiMedx product, and it is derived from two layers of the placenta. Women who are pregnant, and carry their baby full-term are asked before delivery if they would like to donate the placenta for this purpose. There have been no reported complications with this type of product and the process for its use is highly regulated for patient safety. It contains organic cellular components that accelerate tissue and wound healing, and reduce scar tissue formation and inflammation.

Stem cell products are our most recent addition. They have a high concentration of stem cells, proteins and growth factors. We are excited to be one of the select facilities that provide regenerative treatment to offer these products.
